Shohimardon is a unique geographic exclave located in the Fergana district, completely surrounded by the territory of Kyrgyzstan. It is about 17 km from the main territory of Uzbekistan and situated at an altitude of 1,400–1,550 meters above sea level.
History and Name:
The name Shohimardon means “people’s ruler.” According to local legends, the area is associated with Hazrat Ali, and his grave is said to be located here. During the Soviet era, it was known as “Hamzaobod.”
Population and Lifestyle:
Approximately 10,000 people live in the area, mostly Uzbeks. The local population preserves traditional lifestyles and customs.
Nature and Tourism:
Shohimardon is famous for its unique nature and is often called “the Switzerland of the Fergana Valley.” Mountain landscapes, rivers, lakes, and fresh air attract tourists. Qurbonkul (Blue Lake) is a popular summer recreation spot.
Cultural Heritage:
The center of Shohimardon has a historic mosque and mazar, which according to local belief is associated with Hazrat Ali. The mazar was restored after earthquakes.
